[local] film
now that siff is over, i have to catch up on all the normal people movies. for relative definitions of normal. i blew off the tracey fragments last night, but other than that, here is what i am thinking about for the next few weeks --

tuesday 6/24 - oss 117: cairo, nest of spies at the crest. MUST SEE. it's the egyptian james bond parody that won the audience award at siff last year.

wednesday 6/25 - nausicaa of the valley of the wind at the northwest film forum. first of three miyazaki films there this summer.

tuesday 7/1 (probably) - my winnipeg at the siff cinema. you do not even want to know how many times i have seen the trailer, which is amazing in and of itself.

somewhere in there i also need to see iron man & the fall. (not this weekend, though, because it's roller derby!)

other stuff this summer -- the hal ashby series, two more miyazaki, the beyond bond series, the x-files (for this, i would do a midnight, srsly), & the dark knight.

as always, plz to be commenting if you're interested. i am not psychic.

hi. for reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture, i'll be posting here again sometimes*. in anticipation of that, here's what i've done since last july, so you'll be all caught up and stuff:

blah blah blah )

::

* probably just local cat herding & random fannish stuff (whatever that means) so don't get all excited. [info]marginaliaij & the librarinths are still where i *live*.

[lj privacy watch]
i just deleted all of my schools from my profile, because i noticed that the manage schools page now reads: "This information is public, if you provide it."

previously, i *swear*, it could be set to friends-only. this is still the case on insanejournal -- the last field in 'identity' is 'schools', where you can choose to show schools to 'friends only', 'everybody', or 'nobody'.

i think it's pretty shitty of lj to decide to reveal personal information that you've requested remain private, but i don't find it surprising.

...i don't have anything to say about the elimination of the basic account level or the new abuse policy. i just can't be bothered to care all that much.

[what is so hard to understand about opt-in?]
livejournal is implementing an explore feature, which will highlight public entries.

oh yay.

if you would prefer your public entries to not show up here, go to viewing options, scroll down to "additional privacy options", and check "exclude your entries from site explore areas".

see this entry for other "features" you might like to disable.

[poll: hmm]
one of the things on my list before i leave tomorrow is to buy tickets for the sci-fi shorts festival, but it occurred to me that i don't actually know if anyone else is interested. i was going to go to both sessions, which is $15. last year it sold out ahead of time, which is why i was going to get tickets now.

so, you can comment if you are interested, i guess, but also i'd like to know if you're interested in being poked when i'm doing an event-movie, like the shorts or a midnight at the egyptian or the next harry potter or whatever.

if you would like to be emailed when that sort of thing happens, plz stick said address in the box. results viewable by just me. no obligation. void where prohibited.

(if you're thinking "but i haven't seen her in like a year!"... that doesn't matter. if you're reading this and *want* to see me, i want to see you! bring it on!)

6a/lj, in their great wisdom, have determined that we all need to default to a safe search on their site. to override this, go here. go all the way down to the bottom, to "adult content options". lj has set it to "use moderate filtering (filters explicit adult and offensive content)". i have found this to be not true. there is a lot of content i find offensive that it won't filter. so i decided to select "do not filter my results". then i can have offensive content *and* porn.

(also, if for some reason you don't have a birthdate, or at least year, in your profile, that will fuck with your settings.)

i left my journal at "contains no adult content". this is mostly because if i don't, my journal would be impossible to browse by under-18s and/or folks who are not logged in. if you select an adult content rating, every single entry is replaced with a context-less cut tag informing you that there is (or may be) adult content o noes, and you have to click through and pledge to be of age before you can see it. tacky! and a pain in the ass! and pointless, because who is so dumb as to pledge to be not of age?

ALSO. while you are on the settings page you ought to consider unselecting "enable graphic previews" (as that is the snap.com bullshit that they universally applied), selecting "video placeholders" (unless you don't find endless uncut youtube videos as irritating as i do), unselecting "contextual hover menu" (because who cares), and disabling sponsored virtual gifts (because who wants to provide 6a with free advertising?). i also have weblogs & facebook disabled, not that it matters.

as for my thoughts on yaoi on the 'voluntary adult setting'?

1) what does adult or explicit content *mean*? how about offensive?
2) what happens if you are reported for not flagging your content? is it flagged? or are you banned?
3) what is the appeals process?
4) what happens if you abuse the flag?
5) is 'marta' ever going to edit the post rather than burying half-assed answers in comment threads?

...at which point i ran out of give-a-damn. to your immense relief. it's not censorship. it's just dumb.

(i swear-to-god as i went to post this, the episode of 'my so-called life' that's on? is the one where patty tries to censor the student lit mag. which is being put together by lord john marbury. heeeee.)

i just spent a ridiculous (no, seriously) amount of money on lush products that i won't get for another three months. but they brought back old favorites. like slammer, which is the next best thing to back for breakfast. and if i am going to spend too much money, the rest of you should be tempted too.

here, by way of apology, the promised girl!spam!

girls girls girls. i am so glad you asked! i think my entire (sadly depleted) pretty girl pic collection these days is thanks to sinful-caesar. they are AWESOME for the bringing of the pretty, and the restocking of my lost pics )

[info]hobbledehoy sez well if we got boyspam, i think we deserve girlspam. also, um, what are some of your favorite things that we might not have noticed? also, would you buy a permanent account this time around, if you hadn't already?

girlspam in a new entry! later today. i hope.

i cannot imagine there is anything that i love that you don't know about, as i feel like i spend all my time going THIS IS SO GREAT WHY DO YOU NOT LOVE IT TOO??? but this is perhaps because you are you, and i think you are the only person to have read every internet journal-y word i have written since i started on diaryland lo so many years ago.

and... if i did not already have a permanent account, i would -not- buy one now. at the time i bought mine -- in the last sale, two years ago -- i was still operating under the assumption that lj would continue to work in a reasonable manner. today, not so much.

i know there's a lot of weariness with regards to strikethrough07, but here is the crux of the matter to me: journals were deleted without warning, and when the journal owners contacted lj they were told that they were permanently suspended & they had no recourse. they were also told that this had happened because they had "illegal" interests. now, according to the livejournal terms of service, they are supposed to give notice before suspending an account so as to allow journal owners the opportunity to correct the issue, and also, it is not actually illegal to be interested in something. the policies might not have changed, but the procedures clearly did.

yes, -now- everything is supposedly shiny and most of the journals -- not all! -- have been restored because people raised holy hell. but there is absolutely no guarantee that it won't happen again. every statement on [info]news & [info]lj_biz has been vague & worrisome, and it continues to be clear that six apart's concern is for publicity & ad dollars and not defending their userbase. which is their right*, but it is also my right to choose not to give them more money (this, after all, is not my only livejournal account, but all the others are basic/free and will continue to be so).

*dumb as i think it is, because once they start looking at content like that, they'll never be able to stop. and their list of illegal content right now is limited, vague, and reactionary. i am deeply uneasy, and continue to backup this lj twice a week and my others as i update them.

and the poll goes on:

[info]shinyredtype suggested: how awesome shinyredtype is! ;)

she thinks if she winks i will not do it, but she is wrong because omg she is so awesome and everyone should know it. i mean, there are obviously awesome things about her, like that she does roller derby & takes aerials classes & knits & participated in the brooklyn amazing race & introduced me to gogol bordello (okay, not literally) & works with & for non-profits & tries to keep al gore from crying. then there are less obvious things like how she is hilarious and smart and is in a lot of ways totally different from me and yet we get along ridiculously well & she always understands the state of my spoons. which is a rare gift indeed.

[info]eflatmajor says: upcoming knitting projects. like, with linkage. and BOYS!

* once i finish samus (what? it'll happen!) i'm doing serrano in an apple green.

* then, socks, of course. i have the interweave sock book, but i am also eyeing waders, red dwarf, and toe-up jaywalker.

* also, convertible/hobo gloves from not just more socks.

* and finally, possibly, a tardis. i think i need doctor who softies to go with my action figures. i can be grownup?

boys? you want boys? i will give you boys. this is totally random, since i lost my really excellent picture collection on the dead gay laptop. +14 or so, many of which i have tried & failed to make icons of, and yet, cannot delete. )

i can't believe the timing. we had a self-defense class last night and this morning when i came into work a cop was here talking to our director. not that any of it will help against -them-. they don't care if you break their nose or yell. they just keep coming.

i've been reading through everything this morning. i can't believe i was so oblivious on the way up to work. it must have been bumper-to-bumper insanity on the way south. i should have questioned why northbound 5 was so damn open, but you know, i'm spacing out, drinking my coffee, listening to harry potter. i really need to start listening to the damn radio in the morning. i thought it was weird downtown.

i think it's better to be here, though. i'm not alone. we recently restocked our emergency food, so we can hold for a long time. the only real advantage to my apartment is it's on the third floor. here we're on the main level and have floor-to-ceiling windows, but we're moving everything down to the basement. we can barricade in pretty good there. i'm staying up here as long as possible, though, because i won't have internet down there. just my phone.

i hope our first aid kits will be enough. i wonder how many people will come -here-. i always thought in case of apocalypse i would be a victim. i guess now we'll see. i hope you all are well. i hope i see you on the other side.

1. Comment to this post with the name of a character that I have written in fic. Or geeked out about.
2. I will comment telling you the following:
a. What initially prompted me to like the character enough to write about him/her.
b. One of his/her best traits.
c. One of his/her worst traits.
d. How easy/difficult I find it to write the character.
e. The story/chapter/paragraph/phrase where I feel that I truly captured the character.
f. My plans (if any) to write the character in the near future.
(keeping in mind that i have a really terrible memory, so i might utterly fail at part a. also, i don't have to "like" a character to want to write them. also, i hate my writing, so part e might be tough too.)
